Cheap Landscaping Ideas

Let's face some facts -- landscaping can be an expensive business. When I recently called for a quote from a landscaping company, I was shocked. They wanted to charge me $750 to landscape a small patch of land outside the front of my home. Needless to say, I didn't go for it. Luckily, there are quite a few cheap landscaping ideas that can make your yard look incredible for very little money. And, these ideas are so easy to implement that you can do the job yourself, without the need for a professional landscaper. First, let's talk about how to make the most of a flower garden area.
The cheapest way to start a flower garden is from the seed itself. You can buy seed packets for often under one dollar. They take longer to grow, but give the most bang for your buck. You may want to start the seeds indoors, in a small plastic portable greenhouse. Sometimes you can buy seed starting kits that come with everything you need. Once your seeds are hardy sprouts, they can be transferred to the outdoors. Make sure to give your flowers plenty of room to expand and grow. This means not planting them too close together. If you find they are too far apart, you can fill empty space with more flowers or move your existing ones closer together.
Mulch is a must-have for any do-it-yourself landscaper. Mulching your garden makes it not only more beautiful, but provides more protection and warmth for the roots of your plants. You will find many different kinds of mulch to choose from. Your local garden center pro should be able to recommend the best type of mulch for your needs. If you need a low-cost way to edge your garden, try natural stone or wood. Just make sure to apply a coat of water sealant to the wood or stone to prevent water and sun damage.
Part of landscaping is the controlling of weeds and pests in your garden areas which can be tedious. There are plenty of cheap landscaping ideas that can help you accomplish this. For example, sprinkling hot pepper like cayenne around your plants is a penny pinching way to keep plant eating insects from destroying them. Or, make a pungent mixture with herbs, garlic and vinegar and spray it around your plants. This will also deter harmful pests. As mentioned before, mulch is a great idea for the garden because not only does it help retain heat and moisture, it also helps keep plants safe from predatory insects.
