Landscaping Edging Ideas: How to Define Boundaries with Style
![]() |
You will find that there are a great many landscaping edging ideas out there to help you with your boundaries and add the finished look to your outdoor area. These ideas range from using plants and flowers for edging to installing borders made from wood, stone, brick and plastic. It all depends on your preferences and needs. Your geographic location may also factor into your decision, at least if you are interested in using plants or flowers for your edging. Many people define boundaries and/or add interest to specific areas this way.
For example, you may want flowers of a certain color planted along either side of your sidewalk or your driveway. This adds color and natural beauty to an otherwise stark area. If you need edging to define a garden area, go for plastic, wood, stone or brick. The material you choose basically depends on what you think looks the best. Wood is often used for an elevated flower bed. Planks are stacked on top of one another to your preferred elevation to create a natural and beautiful border. Make sure the wood you use has been treated to prevent damage from sunlight and rain.
Stone is another great natural material from which to create your edging. You will find all different colors and sizes of stone available. Go for stone that is fairly large and heavy, preferably rectangular in shape so that the stones can be stacked to the height you prefer. One alternative to stone is of course brick. Brick is a bit more labor intensive to install but looks fantastic, especially if your home is made from brick or features any brick details.
Then there is plastic. You will find that plastic is often the least expensive choice when it comes to edging. Plastic comes in many different shapes and sizes. You will even find plastic edging that looks like wood and metal. From far away, it is hard to tell that the material is indeed plastic. No matter what material you choose, you will find lots of selection in home improvement stores and garden centers. Your choice will depend on the purpose for the edging, your budget and what you think looks best. You may want to look at some color photos of various types of edging to get your own landscaping edging ideas.
